Mattia Petrilli è Primo Flauto dell’Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, e dal 2005 è membro dell’Orchestra Mozart, fondata e diretta da Claudio Abbado, successivamente da Bernard Haitink e Daniele Gatti. Deve la sua formazione a Giusi Mascheretti e Vincenzo Gallo, con cui si diploma giovanissimo presso il Conservatorio della sua città, Como. Successivamente si perfeziona con János Bálint (presso l’Hochschule di Detmold), Jacques Zoon (al Conservatorio di Ginevra), Emmanuel Pahud e Aurele Nicolet.
È tra i vincitori del prestigioso concorso flautistico “Aurele Nicolet International Flute Competition”, e viene invitato come camerista e solista da importanti enti e festival in Italia e all’estero (Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, MiTo, Lingotto Musica, Unione Musicale di Torino, Società del Quartetto di Milano, Septembre Musicale di Montreaux, Luzern Festival, Bologna Festival, Festival di Stresa, Musica sull’Acqua, Festival de Lucerna…). Collabora come primo flauto con le migliori orchestre internazionali, tra cui Philharmonia Orchestra di Londra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, SWR Symphonieorchester, Bamberger Symphoniker, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Camerata Salzburg, Tiroler Festspiele, Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Symphonica Toscanini, Orchestra da Camera di Mantova, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra… È stato primo flauto della Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester dal 2006 al 2008, ha collaborato con la Mahler Chamber Orchestra, con la Lucerne Festival Orchestra su invito di Claudio Abbado, con i Munchner Philharmoniker e la Hungarian National Orchestra.
Lavora sotto la guida dei più grandi direttori, come Abbado, Blomstedt, Chung, Currentzis, Gardiner, Gatti, Gergiev, Harding, Haitink, Honeck, N. Jarvi, V. Jurowski, Kuhn, Maazel, Masur, Mehta, Nelsons, Salonen. Ha collaborato con Vinicio Capossela per il progetto “Bestiario D’Amore”, e con Cristina Zavalloni, Gabriele Mirabassi, Jan Bang, Eivind Aarset, con cui spazia dal jazz all’elettronica… Attualmente è Professore presso il Conservatorio Mascagni di Livorno, è tra gli artisti del network internazionale Play With A Pro, e tiene masterclass in Italia, Germania, Spagna, Austria, Cina.

Mattia Petrilli is the Principal Flute of the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, under the direction of Zubin Mehta and Daniele Gatti. Since 2005 he is a member of the Orchestra Mozart, founded and directed by Claudio Abbado at first, later followed by Bernard Haitink and Daniele Gatti. In 2014 he won the prestigious Nicolet International Flute Competition and since 2020 he works as Principal Flute in the famous Philharmonia Orchestra in London.
Guided by G. Mascheretti and V. Gallo, he graduated from the Conservatory of his hometown, Como, at a very young age, and then continued studying with J. Bálint, J. Zoon, E. Pahud. and A. Nicolet.
He performed as Principal Flute in trial in the London Philharmonic Orchestra (under the direction of Vladimir Jurowski), the Essener Philharmoniker, the Lorin Maazel’s Symphonica Toscanini, and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, together with Abbado, Chung, Jordan, and Blomstedt. He is also often invited to perform as Principal Flute by the best European orchestras: SWR Symphonieorchester, Bamberger Symphoniker, Swedish Radio Symphony, Bergen Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Camerata Salzburg, Teatro La Fenice di Venice, Teatro Regio di Turin, Tiroler Festspiele Erl, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Orchestra da Camera di Mantova, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra…
He works together with the Münchner Philharmoniker, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and with the most important music directors, such as Abbado, Blomstedt, Chung, Currentzis, Gardiner, Gardner, Gatti, Gergiev, Harding, Haitink, Honeck, N. Jarvi, V. Jurowski, Kuhn, Maazel, Masur, Mehta, Nelsons, Salonen, Zagrosek…
He is often invited to perform as chamber musician and soloist by important bodies and festivals, both in Italy and abroad (Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, MiTo, Lingotto Musica, Unione Musicale di Torino, Società del Quartetto di Milano, Montreux Septembre Musical, Lucerne Festival, Bologna Festival, Stresa Festival, Festival Musica sull’Acqua, Festival de Lucerna, and others).
In 2005 he founded the Woodwinds Quintet Papageno, with which he records for Amadeus. He is also a member of the Clara Ensemble, founded by Cristina Zavalloni, with which he explores non-classical paths (jazz, electronic music) and worked with singer-songwriter Vinicio Capossela in the project “Bestiario d’Amore”.
He is currently Professor at the Conservatorio Mascagni in Livorno and is one of the artists of the international network Play With A Pro, as well as giving master classes all over the world (Germany, China, Spain, Italy, Austria, etc).
